Harrington defends Open Championship title

The final day of the 2008 Open Championship saw Padraig Harrington become the first European in over a century to capture consecutive Open Championship titles.

Harrington went into the final day of the tournament 1 shot off the pace, and played brilliantly to edge ahead of Greg Norman and claim the Claret Jug. As had been the case so many time in the past, Norman was his own worst enemy on the final day, carding a succession of bogeys as he surrendered the lead.

"I walk away from here disappointed, but with my head held high, because I hung in there," Norman told reporters after finishing the tournament with a share of third place.

Harrington was all class over the back nine, finishing the tournament with a birdie that saw him complete the 2008 Open Championship on a 3 over score of 283. The last European to claim successive titles at the Open Championship was James Braid in 1905-1906.

"Obviously, winning a major puts you in a special club," Harrington said after finishing the tournament 4 shots clear of the field. "Winning two of them puts you in a new club altogether."
