Greg Norman leads at blustery Birkdale
Greg Norman set up the final act for golf's greatest ever Cinderella story in the 3rd round of the 2008 Open Championship yesterday, by scoring a round of 72 to take the lead going into the final day of play.
Norman's 72 was one of the lowest scores on a day when the wind at Royal Birkdale rendered the course almost unplayable. Conditions were sufficiently bad to blow KJ Choi off his game as the overnight leader dropped five shots to finish the day on 4 over for the tournament.
Meanwhile Padraig Harrington kept his hopes of defending his Open Championship title alive by scoring a round of 72 on the third day of the 2008 Open Championship, joining Choi on second place on the leaderboard.
At the end of the day the cumulative score of the top 20 on the leaderboard read an astonishing 147 over. The lowest score for the 3rd round belonged to Englishman Simon Wakefield, who shot a par 70 to move into third place.
The wind was so strong during the day that Royal Birkdale course management considered calling off play. However improved conditions are expected for the final day, seeting the stage in what is certain to be one of the most thrilling rounds of golf in the tournament's history.
