History in the making at 2008 Open Championship

Greg Norman continued his quest to become the oldest golfer to claim a major yesterday, shooting par for the second consecutive day to hold on to second place at the 2008 Open Championship.

Norman, who last won a golf tournament in 1996, turned 53 this year and is attending the 2008 Open Championship while on honeymoon with new wife, former tennis star Chris Evert.

Yet despite impressing the galleries at Royal Birkdale with his play yesterday, Norman was conservative when discussing his prospects of making history at the 2008 Open Championship.

"I am playing well," Norman told reporters, "but I still haven't been there for a long time."

Norman's words are an understatement given that the Open is only the 21st PGA Tour event that Norman has played in the last 5 years. The 53 year old held the lead for much of the 2nd round, before birdies on the last two holes by KJ Choi gave the Korean a 1 shot lead going into the 3rd round.

"My expectations were almost nil coming in, to tell you the truth," Norman said. "My expectations are still realistically low, and I have to be that way. I can't sit here and say, 'OK, it's great. I'm playing well and I'm doing it.' I am playing well. I am doing it. But I still haven't been there for a long time."
