Martin Kaymer – Open Championship Golfers

Martin Kaymer will some day be one of the giants of international golf – at the tender age of 19 he captured his first professional win and since then he has surpassed every single other German golfer out there, including the versatile talent of Bernhard Langer, by becoming the first German to win the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award.

Challenged the King in Dubai

He is the only man under the age of 25 to be within the top fifty of the Official World Golf Ranking and he gave Tiger Woods a run for his money at the 2008 Dubai Desert Classic, but the experience of Woods won through and he beat the precociously talented young man by only a single shot.
He won his maiden outing on the European Tour, the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and then went on to claim the BMW International Open, beating Denmark’s Anders Hansen in a playoff. What is remarkable is that in both events he finished with a -15 273 and the only time he carded over 70 for the day was in the final round of each tournament!
What is so very impressive about this young German is the consistently low scores he is able to card with startling regularity but he does seem to either go really big, or not at all – he has often missed the cut, especially at tournaments outside of Europe.

More comfortable at Home

He is one of those men who is able to play some of the most exciting and aggressive golf within the boundaries of his home turf but as soon as he ventures across the Atlantic he does seem to falter – he missed the cut at two of the three majors held on US soil – the Masters and the PGA Championship but managed to finish tied 53rd at the US Open and 80th at the Open Championship in really rotten conditions.
Kaymer was one of the young men in contention for the final spot on the European Team for the 2008 Ryder Cup but he lost out to Oliver Wilson and captain, Nick Faldo, opted for experience over youthful exuberance for his wild card picks. There is little doubt Kaymer will soon be an integral part of the European Team who has dominated in the past few battles.
