The Open 2010 Golf Championship

Last year's tournament saw Tom Watson come within a hair's breadth of a historic win before losing to Stewart Cink. This year's tournament could blood another new major championship winner, however; the old guard of Woods, Mickelson and Els are still likely to play a major role in events at St. Andrews.

Whichever player comes out on top in 2010, fans are guaranteed four days of enthralling golf from the windy sea-side links of St. Andrews.

A look at the 2010 British Open

The 2010 British Open is the third major of the year, following on the 2010 US Masters and the 2010 US Open Championship. Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy have emerged as the winners of major championships this season, and both are priced amongst the favourites to win the tournament.

However, there's a host of talent in the field that could rise to the occassion, particularly if the elements once again wreak havoc with the pecking order in professional golf. Ernie Els has found some strong, steady form, while Tiger Woods won the British Open on the two previous occasions that it was hosted by Saint Andrews.

Apart from the top ranked players, the likes of Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, KJ Choi and Vijay Singh all have the skill and pedigree, if not form, to make an impact on the tournament.

2010 Open Championship Venue

The 139th British Open Championship will be held on the oldest golf course in the world, the Old Course at St Andrews, Fife. The course brings a sense of history to any occasion, and is rated as the best in the world outside of the United States.

St Andrews' close proximity to the ocean has a measurable effect on ball performance and play, and only the finest players in the history of golf have managed to claim more than a single major championship title at this location.
